7pm • Bloor Cinema • $9
Downtown Locals (USA, 2006 • 82min)
Directors: Robin Muir, Rory Muir • Producer: Underground Stories LLC
CANADIAN PREMIERE
Public spaces are not just our parks, civic squares, sidewalks, and pedestrian malls. They are also those places that, while they may be private property, are in fact public use. The subway platforms and mezzanines of our public transit spaces are just such an example. The practice and tradition of performers in the subways is long and storied, and their artistic practice lends character to public spaces that are otherwise inundated with advertising.
In New York, as in Toronto, subway performers must audition for the opportunity to perform their craft for the public. But who should decide, the transit authority or the public? Why can't a man stand and perform? Robin & Rory Muir follow the lives of six unique subway performers as they struggle to earn a living and defend their right to perform in the New York City underground.
